What is a Baby Shower?
In American tradition, friends and family of the expectant mother gather together to offer gifts for the mother and her unborn baby. It is a celebration of the upcoming birth and a rite of passage from woman to mother. It is called a baby shower because the mother is “showered” with gifts.
Interestingly, the history of the baby shower dates back only to the time of WWII, as women began welcoming children in the baby boom era. In those days, baby showers were planned by a close friend or family members with women the only invitees and the expectant mother seated in a specially decorated seat for the unwrapping of the gifts. Some have speculated that this tradition started as a companion to the traditional marriage trousseau, offering the expectant mother the necessities of early childhood.

Common Questions About Baby Showers
Who should I invite to my baby shower?
Tradition dictates women-only - friends, family and coworkers. But a lot of those rules have changed in recent years, so if you want to invite the dad and other male friends, family and coworkers, feel free!
Should I include my baby-registry information on the invitations?
Absolutely! Your friends and family want to know what you need and what better way to tell them than by sharing your registry information?
What is the best time of day for a baby shower?
That probably depends on what type of food you want to serve. If you want a more formal, plated meal, host your baby shower later in the afternoon or near dinner time. If you want lighter refreshments, have it earlier in the day.
How long should the baby shower be?
Again, this is a personal choice. However, most showers average about two hours, depending on the number of guests and which (if any) activities you choose.
Who pays for the baby shower?
Usually, the host pays for the shower. It is considered a gift to the expectant mother.
At what stage in pregnancy should the baby shower be hosted?
Baby showers are usually held 4-6 weeks before the due date.
